A French wash stand
I was thrilled to find this wash stand at an auction. Although the paint is peeling I have resisted temptation to sand it down as I think it adds to the charm.
Complete with an arm for hanging a towel, original ceramic basin and plug still in situ it will look lovely filled with ice or with a pot plant. The bottom shelf would have held the jug for water. My research shows this wash stand is likely to be from the mid to late 18th century - after this time the washstand started to 'grow' with mirrors and shelving for soap as we all became aware of the importance of personal hygiene!
I can find no answer to they are called 'French' wash stands!
